Saudi Arabia said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed multiple drones launched from Iraqi territory that were targeting oil facilities in the Kingdom’s Eastern Province and the Riyadh region.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Saudi Ministry of Defence said all the drones were successfully shot down before reaching their intended targets, according to Anadolu Agency.

The ministry alleged that the attack was carried out by Iran-backed groups operating from Iraqi territory.

It said Saudi Arabia reserves its legitimate right to defend its territory, critical infrastructure and national security, and retains the right to respond to the attack at a time and place of its choosing.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs also strongly condemned the attack, reaffirming the Kingdom’s determination to protect its security, sovereignty and vital installations.

The ministry added that Saudi Arabia has the right to take the necessary measures against the source of the attack.

Riyadh urged the Iraqi government to ensure that Iraqi territory is not used as a launching point for attacks against Saudi Arabia and to take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents.

There was no immediate response from the Iraqi government to the Saudi allegations.
