JASHORE: Hundreds of local residents on Tuesday surrounded the residence of Jashore-4 MP and Jashore Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Professor Ghulam Rasul in the Nilganj area of Jashore town, amid allegations that he and his daughter assaulted a madrasa student and a woman.
According to local residents, a long-running dispute over Al Madrasatus Shariyah and its affiliated mosque escalated on Tuesday morning. They alleged that MP Ghulam Rasul and his daughter, Anannya, assaulted Ayan, a child studying at the madrasa, and a woman identified as Rexna. They claimed Rexna suffered a head injury in the incident.
Sources said both sides had reached a settlement over the dispute the previous night. However, tensions flared again on Tuesday morning after the madrasa reportedly reopened and was allegedly instructed to remain closed. Around 10:00am, hundreds of residents gathered in front of the MP’s residence and staged a protest.
The protesters alleged that the madrasa had been threatened with closure and demanded a fair investigation into the incident and legal action against those responsible. They also accused the MP and his daughter of behaving disrespectfully towards madrasa students over a prolonged period.
Eyewitnesses said that at around 11:30am, a relative of the MP arrived at the scene in an attempt to resolve the situation but was assaulted by a section of the protesters. As tensions escalated, demonstrators blocked the Jashore-Narail Highway, chanted slogans and demanded justice for the alleged victims.
Rejecting the allegations, the MP’s wife, Sharmin Bhina, said their daughter Anannya has been suffering from mental health problems. She claimed that although the madrasa had been closed, some children entered the premises and created disorder. According to her, the family was falsely accused after objecting to the situation, and their residence was later attacked.
Police from Kotwali Police Station rushed to the scene and began efforts to bring the situation under control.
Police said they were holding discussions with both parties to restore normalcy, while law enforcement personnel remained deployed at the scene.
As of the latest reports, the protest outside the MP’s residence was continuing.
