Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan on Wednesday announced the formation of an investigation committee to determine the cause of the wall collapse at Mirpur College that killed two people and injured seven others.
The committee will include representatives from RAJUK, the Public Works Department (PWD) and the DNCC, he said while speaking to reporters after visiting the accident site in Mirpur-2.
The DNCC administrator said legal action would be taken against those found responsible once the committee submits its findings.
“No death is desirable. I am deeply saddened by today’s incident,” he said.
According to preliminary observations, the wall, built in 2014, was not constructed with the required materials. Instead of using a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) structure, it was built only with brick masonry, which may have contributed to the collapse, he added.
Shafiqul Islam Khan said the DNCC would hold discussions with the college authorities to reinforce the remaining boundary walls and ensure they are structurally safe to prevent similar accidents.
Responding to a question about those injured while waiting to collect Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) products, he said the city corporation would try to provide financial assistance to the victims.
He also said the government, following the Prime Minister’s directive, had arranged free medical treatment for the injured.
Local MP Sanjida Islam Tulee, the DNCC chief engineer and local political leaders accompanied the administrator during the site visit.
The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when a boundary wall of Mirpur College suddenly collapsed in the Mirpur-2 area, killing two people on the spot and injuring seven others.
