Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has sent a consignment of the state’s renowned Queen (Q) variety pineapples to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as a goodwill gesture in return for the mangoes gifted by Bangladesh.
The shipment arrived through the Akhaura Land Port in Brahmanbaria at around 1:00pm on Wednesday.
According to Md Alauddin, officer-in-charge of the Akhaura International Immigration Checkpost, the consignment comprised 620 Queen pineapples packed in 100 cartons, transported in a pickup truck.
Officials from the Assistant High Commission of India in Chattogram received the shipment at the border before handing it over to representatives of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
The handover ceremony at the zero line of the land port was attended by Indian Assistant High Commission officials Pankaj Jyoti Das and Sajib Chakraborty, Akhaura Immigration Checkpost Officer-in-Charge Md Alauddin, and Akhaura Customs Revenue Officer Md Jasim Uddin.
Representing the Tripura government were Apurba Roy, Secretary of the state’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department; Phani Bhushan Jamatia, Director of the department; Rajib Ghosh, Adviser to the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation; and officials of the Border Security Force (BSF).
Officials from the Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department formally handed over the consignment and related documents to representatives of the Indian mission.
“We received mangoes as a gift from the Government of Bangladesh. In return, the Government of Tripura is sending pineapples as a token of goodwill,” said Apurba Roy, Secretary of Tripura’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department.
Officials said the exchange reflects the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh and India and aims to further strengthen bilateral ties and goodwill between the neighbouring regions. Bangladesh had earlier sent mangoes as a seasonal gift, while Tripura responded by sending its famous Queen variety pineapples.
