India has left the decision of whether Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will attend the upcoming BRICS summit entirely to Bangladesh, while affirming that New Delhi eagerly awaits the opportunity to welcome the Bangladeshi leader.
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, made the remarks on Wednesday afternoon, July 29, 2026, following a courtesy meeting with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayed Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka. The session marked Trivedi’s first official meeting with the foreign ministry leadership since assuming his post.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, High Commissioner Trivedi noted that attending the summit remains entirely a matter of the Prime Minister’s priorities and discretion, adding that India hopes the visit takes place soon and stands fully prepared to host the Bangladesh head of government.
Trivedi described the discussions as warm and cordial, covering bilateral ties, cultural heritage, and shared sporting interests such as cricket. He also highlighted the recent resumption of Indian visa services for Bangladeshi nationals, noting that it will significantly ease travel and strengthen people-to-people connections between the two neighboring nations.
The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in New Delhi on September 12–13. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended an invitation to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend the outreach segment of the summit in Bangladesh’s capacity as the current chair of BIMSTEC. The Bangladesh government has yet to announce a final decision regarding the Prime Minister’s attendance.
