BANDARBAN: Police recovered the bodies of two tourists from a ravine near Keokradong Hill in Ruma upazila of Bandarban late Thursday.

The bodies were found around 11:00 pm in the Bagalek View Point area along the Ruma–Keokradong road, said Ruma Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manas Barua.

The deceased were identified as Jamir Uddin (32), son of Jahir Uddin from Borhanuddin upazila in Bhola, and Rokaiya Akter (30), daughter of Md Chunnu Gazi from the Posta TSO area under Lalbagh Police Station in Dhaka.

Quoting the group’s tour guide, the OC said 10 tourists left Dhaka on six motorcycles at around 11:30 pm on Wednesday for Bandarban.

They reached Ruma at about 2:30 pm on Thursday and checked into a cottage in the Bagalek area for an overnight stay.

At around 5:30 pm, the group visited the Bagalek View Point. After taking photographs, eight of the tourists returned, but Jamir and Rokaiya reportedly ignored the guide’s instructions and rode their motorcycle beyond the designated viewpoint.

The guide, Md Ismail, informed the Bagalek Army Camp at around 6:00 pm after they failed to return.

A joint search operation involving the Bangladesh Army, police and local residents later recovered the bodies from a nearby ravine at around 11:00 pm.

Police said legal procedures are underway, and the exact cause of the incident is being investigated.
