Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Friday alleged that extortion and corruption in the country’s transport sector have not been curbed under the current government but have instead increased.
Speaking as the chief guest at the triennial national conference of the Bangladesh Sramik Federation at the National Press Club in the capital, he claimed that individuals affiliated with the ruling party were involved in extortion and harassment of transport workers.
He also said that those who claim to believe in democracy must respect public opinion and ensure the implementation of the verdict supported by 70 percent of the people through a referendum.
“The government claims to have directed the authorities to stop these irregularities. If that is the case, why do they continue?” he asked.
Referring to the July Movement, Dr Shafiqur Rahman said workers had made the greatest sacrifice, followed by students and the general public, and that their aspirations should be reflected in state governance.
At the same event, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan said extortion in the transport sector could not be eliminated without establishing a government free from corruption and extortion.
He stressed the need to build a just and discrimination-free state to ensure the legitimate rights of workers.
