A 17-year-old female cricketer has died by suicide in Nagpur, India, after reportedly failing to secure a place in the Vidarbha Cricket Association team.
Police suspect that disappointment over not being selected for the team may have prompted the teenager to take the extreme step.
Several Indian media outlets, including India Today and The Times of India, have reported the incident.
According to The Times of India, the teenager was identified as Aditi Chaukhandе. Police said she was originally from Akola, Maharashtra, and had been living in Nagpur with her mother for the past two years to receive better cricket training. She regularly practiced at a local cricket academy. Her brother is also a professional cricketer.
Police recovered the teenager’s body from a residence in the Laxminagar area of Nagpur at around 5:30 a.m. last Wednesday.
Police also reportedly recovered a handwritten note from the scene that read, “I wasn’t selected for the team.” Investigators suspect that disappointment over not being selected for the Vidarbha team may have contributed to her death.
A police officer said the young cricketer had been emotionally distressed after her name was left out of the recently announced Vidarbha squad. However, the officer added that the exact circumstances and cause of death will be established after the completion of the investigation.
Police visited the scene, conducted an initial examination and sent the body for a post-mortem examination. An unnatural death case has been registered in connection with the incident.
