With the growing use of smartphones, laptops and computers for work, study and entertainment, people are spending a significant part of their day in front of screens. Prolonged screen exposure often leads to eye strain, dryness, blurred vision, headaches and discomfort.

Experts warn that extended screen use can affect not only the eyes but also the skin. Some studies suggest that blue light may increase melanin production, potentially causing pigmentation and dark spots, while also impacting collagen and raising the risk of premature wrinkles—though more research is needed.

Germs on mobile screens can also contribute to acne or skin irritation. Additionally, excessive screen time and lack of sleep may leave the skin looking dull and fatigued.

While reducing screen time entirely may not be practical, adopting a few simple habits can significantly minimise the damage.

One of the most effective methods is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain caused by continuous screen focus.

People also tend to blink less when using screens, which can quickly dry out the eyes. Making a conscious effort to blink more often or briefly closing the eyes during breaks can help maintain moisture.

Staying well-hydrated is equally important. Experts say dehydration can reduce the eyes’ natural lubrication, leading to dry eye problems. Drinking enough water helps maintain the balance of tears that protect the eyes.

Using blue light protection glasses may also be beneficial, as blue light from screens can strain the eyes. Those with persistent dryness may consider lubricating eye drops under medical advice.

Specialists further note that excessive screen use can impact sleep and overall wellbeing. Taking regular breaks, ensuring adequate sleep, eating a balanced diet and maintaining proper eye care routines are essential.

However, if you experience severe eye pain, prolonged blurred vision or unusual discomfort, doctors advise seeking professional eye care rather than self-medicating.
