Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been released on bail from a jail in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
According to sources close to Benazir, a Dubai court granted him conditional bail on July 27, and he was released on July 30 after completing the required legal formalities.
The sources confirmed the development on Sunday, adding that although Benazir has been released, he is not permitted to leave the UAE under the court’s bail conditions.
Sources said the Dubai court heard arguments from both sides regarding Bangladesh’s extradition request and related legal documents before deciding to grant conditional bail.
However, the Dubai authorities have not issued any official statement on the matter.
The arrest of Benazir Ahmed by Dubai Police was first disclosed in Bangladesh’s Parliament on June 14 by Home Adviser Salahuddin Ahmed.
He said the Bangladesh government had been informed through an email sent on June 12 by the National Central Bureau (NCB) of the UAE Ministry of Interior that Benazir had been detained in Dubai in connection with a corruption case.
Following his arrest, the Bangladesh government formally sought his extradition through the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
As part of the process, a 144-page dossier prepared by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) was translated into Arabic and sent to the UAE through diplomatic channels.
The documents included court-issued arrest warrants, details of the corruption cases against him, and other materials supporting the extradition request.
