A total of 38 registered political parties, including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, have submitted their audited income and expenditure reports for 2025 to the Election Commission (EC), while several others have sought additional time or failed to respond.
Speaking to reporters at the Election Commission headquarters on Monday, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said registered political parties were required to submit their audit reports by July 31. As the deadline fell on a Friday, it was extended to August 2.
Of the 59 registered political parties, one remains suspended. Among the remaining 58 parties, 38 submitted their audit reports, 13 applied for an extension, and eight did not respond.
The EC secretary said notices would be issued to the parties that failed to respond, in accordance with the law.
On local government elections and proposed legal reforms, Akhtar Ahmed said the commission has prepared recommendations to amend relevant laws. The proposals include clarifying the definition of law enforcement agencies, as well as revising provisions related to dual citizenship and loan defaulters. The recommendations will be sent to the Local Government Division.
Regarding election preparations, he said the process involves three key stages: legal and regulatory frameworks, procurement of election materials, and training. The Election Commission is continuing its preparations, noting that there is usually a 45-day gap between the announcement of the election schedule and polling day.
He added that finalising and printing the voter list takes about one and a half months, meaning that around three months of overall preparation is generally required before holding an election.
On the voter list, Akhtar Ahmed said those who turn 18 by July 31 are being included in the updated roll. If necessary, a supplementary voter list may also be prepared before the election.
Responding to a question on dialogue with political parties ahead of local government elections, he said the EC has already sought parties’ opinions on various electoral regulations and that there is currently no decision to hold any additional dialogue.
