Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for national unity through dialogue, stressing that Bangladesh must move forward by avoiding division and conflict.
Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion marking the second anniversary of the July Mass Uprising, held at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Monday, Fakhrul said the country’s long struggle for democracy has strengthened public aspirations, further reinforced by the July movement.
The event was jointly organised by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ). It began with prayers for the souls of those who were martyred during the July uprising.
Fakhrul described July as “a part of our hearts,” paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives and those who were injured during the movement. He said their sacrifices have created an opportunity for meaningful change, which must now be utilised to build a democratic state based on people’s rights.
“To honour the sacrifices of the July martyrs, we must ensure people’s rights and establish an effective democratic system,” he said, adding that fulfilling the aspirations of the people would be the true repayment of that sacrifice.
The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the July Charter, noting that work has already begun and a related parliamentary committee has been formed. He emphasised that necessary reforms should be carried forward through dialogue and consensus.
Highlighting the role of the media, Fakhrul said journalism remains a vital pillar of democracy. He assured that issues related to journalists’ welfare, employment and safety would be addressed with importance, and that the state has a responsibility towards the families of slain and injured journalists from the movement.
He added that the government is working to meet public expectations and build a “new Bangladesh,” urging all to work together for development, democratic progress and public welfare.
As a special guest, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahid Uddin Swapan said the nation will never forget the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives in democratic movements, including the July uprising. He noted that their contributions would be fully honoured only when people’s rights are ensured through a functional parliament.
