A suspected thief was beaten to death by a mob in Pabna’s Ishwardi upazila after allegedly attempting to rob a grocery shop, leaving three people injured in the incident.
The incident occurred around 3:00 am on Monday in the Thandatola area of Mistripara village under Sahapur Union. The deceased was identified as Manik Hossain, also known as Sumon (32), a resident of the same union.
According to the injured shop owner, Habibul Mondal, the suspect entered his grocery store late at night with the intention of stealing. Hearing noises from his nearby house, he came out and tried to stop the intruder. At that point, the accused allegedly attacked him with a sharp weapon, striking his hand and back.
Hearing his cries for help, Habibul’s two sons rushed to the scene but were also attacked and injured by the suspect.
Local residents soon gathered at the scene, overpowered the accused and beat him severely, leading to his death on the spot.
The injured shop owner and his two sons were taken to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi Police Station, Asadur Rahman, said police visited the scene and recovered the body, which has been sent to Pabna General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
He added that an investigation is underway and legal action will be taken accordingly.
