The martyrdom anniversary of Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, was observed in Dhaka on July 3 through a series of commemorative programmes.
The events were organized by the Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah Swadhinata Parishad (NSSP) in the presence of Nawabzada Ali Abbasuddaulah, a descendant of Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah.
According to the organizers, they are not aware of any other formal observance of the martyrdom anniversary in either Bangladesh or the Indian state of West Bengal. They said the significance of commemorating Siraj ud-Daulah’s martyrdom is no less important than observing Plassey Day on June 23.
The organizers also announced that the Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah Swadhinata Parishad, founded by Nawabzada Ali Abbasuddaulah, will observe the anniversary annually.
The day-long programme included wearing black badges, hoisting black flags, recitation of the Holy Quran, a remembrance meeting, a prayer session, and the distribution of food among underprivileged people. Organizers said the events were intended to pay tribute to Siraj ud-Daulah’s sacrifice and to inspire younger generations by highlighting his role in history.
Speakers at the remembrance meeting recalled that on July 2, 1757, Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah fell victim to a conspiracy and was brutally killed by Mohammadi Beg on the orders of Miran, the son of Mir Jafar. They said his death paved the way for the consolidation of British colonial rule in the Indian subcontinent.
