Rail communication between Dhaka and Bangladesh’s northern and western regions via the Jamuna Bridge was temporarily suspended on Tuesday after a coach of the Dhaka-bound intercity Silk City Express derailed at Shaheed M. Mansur Ali Railway Station in Sirajganj.
The accident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. as the train was entering the station, disrupting one of the country’s busiest rail corridors.
Following the derailment, all train services on the Jamuna Bridge route were halted, leaving several intercity and local trains bound for Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and other destinations stranded at different stations. Thousands of passengers were left facing significant travel disruptions.
Khairul Islam Talukdar, Officer-in-Charge of Sirajganj Bazar Railway Police Station, said a coach of the Silk City Express left the tracks while entering the station. As a precaution, train operations on the main railway line through the Jamuna Bridge were suspended until the damaged coach is removed and the track is declared safe.
Railway officials said rescue operations were initiated immediately after the incident was reported. A relief train has been dispatched from nearby locations, including Ishwardi, to remove the derailed coach and restore the damaged section of the track.
Train services will resume once the rescue team completes recovery work and the track is repaired, officials added.
The cause of the derailment has not yet been determined. Railway authorities said an investigation will be conducted to establish the exact circumstances behind the accident.
