Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities to prepare a comprehensive, accurate, and transparent database of all farmers in the country by December this year, aiming to ensure their rights and proper access to government support.
He issued the directive at a meeting on farmer cards held at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday (August 4), according to Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.
The Prime Minister stressed that the database must be developed through proper verification to ensure credibility. He also instructed that farmer cards should include photographs and QR codes, and store key information such as farmers’ identities, agricultural production details, government assistance records, and market-related data.
Officials at the meeting informed that the process of opening bank accounts for farmers has already begun. Once preparations are complete, the cards will be distributed to farmers in phases.
The farmer card initiative has been introduced to ensure that government subsidies, easy-term loans, incentives, and other benefits in the agricultural sector reach genuine farmers quickly and efficiently. In the current fiscal year, around 4.3 million farmers are expected to receive the cards, with a plan to bring nearly 20 million farmers under the programme within the next three years.
Agriculture and Fisheries Adviser Aminur Rashid, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin, Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, Special Assistant Shakirul Islam Khan, BNP Special Secretary Belayet Hossain, and Bangladesh Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited President SM Amir Hamza Shatil, among other senior officials, attended the meeting.
