India has clarified its position regarding a scheduled public address by former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since being ousted from power following the mass uprising in Bangladesh.
Speaking at a regular media briefing on Tuesday, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded to questions about Hasina’s planned speech at an event in New Delhi on August 5.
The event is being organised by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia, where Hasina is expected to deliver her first public address since taking refuge in India.
Jaiswal said the programme is being organised by a private media organisation and has no connection with the Government of India.
“The event is being organised by a private media organisation. The Government of India has no involvement in it, and any views expressed from that platform should not be construed as those of the government,” he said.
