Veteran Bangladeshi folk singer, composer and music director Mujib Pardeshi, best known for the iconic song Ami Bondi Karagare (“I Am Imprisoned”), has been sent to jail following a court order in connection with a cheque dishonour case.
The order was issued by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah after police produced the artist before the court.
He was arrested by Uttara West Police on an outstanding warrant.
According to court documents, Idris Ali Biswas filed the case in a Magura court in 2022 over a dishonoured cheque worth Tk 1 million.
On March 15, 2023, the 2nd Joint District and Sessions Judge of Magura sentenced Pardeshi to one year of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk 1 million, equivalent to the cheque amount.
As he failed to appear in court after the verdict, an arrest warrant was issued against him.
During Tuesday’s hearing, no lawyer appeared on behalf of Pardeshi.
The complainant’s counsel opposed bail, arguing that the singer had remained absconding despite being aware of the case.
The court subsequently ordered that he be sent to jail.
Mujib Pardeshi, whose real name is Mujibur Rahman Molla, rose to fame in the 1980s with his folk songs.
His rendition of Ami Bondi Karagare became one of Bangladesh’s most beloved songs and was later featured in the blockbuster film Beder Meye Jyotsna.
He also served as a BCS cadre officer and held positions as music director at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) and assistant secretary at the Ministry of Information.
