New Delhi says it is closely watching developments related to Bangladesh’s reported discussions with China on J-10CE fighter jets and the proposed China-Myanmar-Bangladesh economic corridor
India on Friday (3 July) said it is closely monitoring reports of Bangladesh’s discussions with China over the possible procurement of J-10CE multirole fighter aircraft, as well as Beijing’s proposal to establish a China-Myanmar-Bangladesh economic corridor.
Speaking at a regular media briefing in New Delhi, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Randhir Jaiswal, said New Delhi remains attentive to strategic developments in neighbouring countries and responds accordingly.
“We closely follow all such developments in our neighbourhood and take appropriate measures as required,” Jaiswal said.
His remarks came in response to questions about reports that Bangladesh is in discussions with China regarding the purchase of J-10CE fighter jets and is considering a proposal for a China-Myanmar-Bangladesh economic corridor. According to reports, the issue was discussed during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China.
Jaiswal also addressed questions regarding China’s reported commitment to support the Teesta River development project during the visit.
He said India’s development cooperation with Bangladesh is based on a mutually agreed roadmap that is reviewed on a regular basis.
“Our developmental assistance for projects in Bangladesh is based on a mutually agreed roadmap which is regularly reviewed,” he said.
Referring specifically to the Teesta River project, Jaiswal noted that India had already communicated its position to Bangladesh.
“Our views on the Teesta river project have been previously conveyed to the Bangladesh side,” he said, adding that India would “factor in all the related developments in our overall approach to Bangladesh.”
The comments come amid growing regional attention over Bangladesh’s evolving strategic and economic engagements with China, particularly in the areas of defence cooperation, infrastructure development and regional connectivity.
