National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan on Wednesday called for the immediate return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh under the existing bilateral prisoner transfer agreement between Bangladesh and India
Speaking at a prayer and food distribution programme in the capital’s Kathalbagan area marking the second anniversary of the July Uprising, Asif said the process of handing over Sheikh Hasina should begin in accordance with the agreement so that she can face judicial proceedings in Bangladesh.
He also warned that if India allows Sheikh Hasina to use its territory to deliver political speeches or statements, it would be viewed as direct interference in Bangladesh’s domestic political affairs and as an attempt to destabilise the country’s internal political environment.
At the same time, Asif said the diplomatic relationship between Bangladesh and India should not remain hostage to the issue of whether Sheikh Hasina is given shelter in India.
Reflecting on the aspirations of the July Uprising, the NCP spokesperson said that although the uprising had brought about the fall of what he described as an authoritarian regime, the process of dismantling the system associated with it remained incomplete even after two years.
He said the struggle of students and the public would continue until what he termed the “remaining elements of fascism” were completely eliminated.
Other central and local leaders and activists of the NCP also attended the programme, where special prayers were offered in memory of those killed during the July Uprising.
