Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Wednesday observed July Uprising Day with a series of commemorative programmes, including the rendition of the national anthem, a victory rally, a marathon, the unveiling of a special publication and cultural activities, paying tribute to those who participated in the July 2024 Mass Uprising.
The day’s events began at 11:00 am with the collective singing of the national anthem at the university’s Central Shaheed Minar. Teachers, students, officers and employees then joined a victory rally that marched through major roads on the campus before concluding at “Odommo-24,” a monument built in memory of the July Uprising.
Following the rally, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan unveiled “Jagaran,” a commemorative magazine highlighting Jahangirnagar University’s role and contributions during the July 2024 movement, at the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) building.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor said the July 2024 Uprising, like Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971, represents a defining chapter in the country’s history and should be remembered by future generations.
He said the sacrifices made by those who took part in the movement must be preserved through research, literature, art and cultural initiatives so that the values and aspirations of the uprising continue to inspire the nation.
Prof Kamrul Ahsan also urged all to uphold the spirit of July by rejecting hatred, intolerance and divisive politics, stressing that universities have a vital role in promoting democratic values, critical thinking and social harmony.
The programme was attended by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr Md Shamsul Alam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Muhammad Nazrul Islam, Treasurer Prof Dr Md Sohel Rana, deans of various faculties, teachers, university officials, JUCSU leaders, representatives of different student organisations, officers, employees and students.
Earlier in the morning, JUCSU organised a marathon titled “36 July JAKSU Run” to mark the occasion. The event began at 6:00 am and was inaugurated by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Muhammad Nazrul Islam.
Among those participating in the marathon were JUCSU General Secretary Md Mazharul Islam, Sports Secretary Md Mahamudul Hasan Kiran, alongside teachers, students, officers and employees.
To commemorate the day, the university also arranged special meals for students at all residential halls, while various academic and cultural activities were organised across the campus to honour the memory of the July Uprising and reaffirm the university community’s commitment to democratic values and social justice.
