Former lawmaker and Awami League leader Akhtaruzzaman, also a former vice-president (VP) and general secretary (GS) of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
According to police, he was arrested during a raid at a residence in the Gulshan area of Dhaka around 10:00 pm on Wednesday.
Authorities said he is accused of involvement in the activities of a banned organisation and is also facing multiple cases, including murder charges.
Akhtaruzzaman, 73, served as a member of parliament for Gazipur-5.
In the 2024 12th parliamentary election, he won the seat as an independent candidate after not receiving the Awami League nomination, defeating the party’s nominated candidate.
He had previously been elected to parliament from Gazipur-3 in 1996.
