Naogaon: Detectives from the Naogaon District Police have arrested a member of a gang involved in the robbery of gold from a businessman and seized the microbus allegedly used in the crime.
The arrested suspect has been identified as Jamal Hossain Fulon, a resident of Kotwali Police Station area in Jashore district. He was arrested from the Kotwali area on the night of Wednesday, August 5.
The information was disclosed by Naogaon Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tarikul Islam through the district police media cell at around 1:00 a.m. on Thursday.
According to SP Tarikul Islam, at around 11:00 a.m. on July 30, he received information that unidentified criminals had intercepted a gold trader, Subhash Pal, at Tajer Mor in Naogaon town and robbed him of gold after blocking his path with a microbus.
Upon receiving the report, the superintendent immediately instructed the officer-in-charge of Naogaon Sadar Police Station and the chief of the District Detective Branch (DB) to launch an operation. Additional police personnel were deployed across the town to search vehicles, and a case was subsequently filed with Naogaon Sadar Police Station.
Under the direct supervision of the police superintendent, the DB launched an extensive investigation using information technology. Newly installed artificial intelligence (AI)-connected CCTV cameras played a crucial role in the investigation. By analyzing digital data, CCTV footage, and information collected from multiple districts and toll plazas, investigators were able to identify the vehicle used in the robbery.
SP Tarikul Islam said that, with assistance from Jashore District Police, detectives conducted a two-day operation beginning on August 3 and arrested Jamal Hossain Fulon, who allegedly drove the microbus used in the robbery. In a separate operation, police also seized the black microbus involved in the incident.
During interrogation, Jamal reportedly confessed that a four-member gang carried out the robbery. According to investigators, the gang followed gold trader Subhash Pal from Dhaka in the black microbus. After Pal boarded a Shyamoli Paribahan bus from Kalyanpur, Dhaka, to Naogaon, the suspects allegedly tailed the bus all the way through Bogura to Naogaon.
After Pal got off the bus at the Naogaon Dhaka Bus Terminal, the gang allegedly snatched a bag containing approximately 14 bhori of gold from him at Tajer Mor before fleeing the scene.
The police superintendent said that as police intensified vehicle searches throughout Naogaon immediately after the robbery, the suspects split up and escaped in different directions.
Jamal Hossain Fulon has since given a confessional statement before the court. Police said efforts are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects and recover the stolen gold.
