China has successfully launched two advanced remote sensing satellites equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology into designated orbit.
The sea-based launch was conducted using the ‘Smart Dragon-3’ carrier rocket off the coast of eastern Shandong Province on Wednesday (August 5).
According to state news agency Xinhua, this marked the 12th mission for the Smart Dragon-3 rocket series.
Developed by Chinese tech firm Star. AI Spatio-Temporal Intelligence Technology Co., Ltd., the twin satellites will provide intelligent remote sensing services to Uzbekistan and Indonesia.
Unlike conventional satellites that transmit raw data back to Earth for processing, these AI-driven units execute real-time on-board computing and data analysis in space.
This slashes decision-making and disaster warning lead times from hours to just a few minutes.
Specifically, one satellite will monitor the entire lifecycle of Uzbekistan’s cotton production, optimizing crop management from sowing to harvesting.
The second unit will support Indonesia’s agricultural safety by assessing crop growth and mitigating natural disaster risks.
China highlighted that integrating AI with space systems advances its high-tech capabilities, offering developing nations enhanced capabilities in agriculture, weather forecasting, mineral exploration, and disaster management.
