Asteroids could supply metals for future Mars colonies

Asteroids could one day help solve one of the biggest challenges of establishing a permanent human settlement on Mars: supplying the raw materials needed to build and maintain it.

A recent study by researchers at EPFL in Switzerland suggests that mining metal-rich asteroids and transporting the resources to Mars could be technically feasible under the right conditions.

A Mars colony would require huge quantities of metals such as iron, nickel and aluminium for habitats, machinery, tools and replacement parts. Transporting all those materials from Earth would be costly and inefficient, with cargo missions to Mars typically taking six to nine months.

Researchers examined thousands of potential supply routes between Mars and asteroids, considering travel energy, the amount of recoverable metal and the fuel required for each mission.

One key possibility is producing rocket fuel in space. Some carbon-rich asteroids contain water ice and carbon that could potentially be processed into propellant. This could reduce the amount of fuel spacecraft would need to carry from Earth.

The study identified certain asteroids that could potentially be reached using existing spacecraft technology and could provide enough resources to make the missions worthwhile.

However, asteroid mining remains far from becoming a commercial reality. The success of such a system would depend heavily on selecting suitable asteroids and developing reliable technologies for extracting and processing their resources.

The research nevertheless points to a possible future in which asteroids become part of a space-based supply network, delivering essential metals to Mars and reducing the planet’s dependence on shipments from Earth.

Rather than destroying asteroids, as imagined in films such as Armageddon, humanity may eventually use them as vast floating mineral reserves to help build a new world beyond Earth.
