The central committee of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (JASAS) has announced a series of cultural and organisational programmes, including staging two plays by National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, producing a full-length film on his life, and organising a nationwide talent hunt.
The decisions were taken at a meeting of the JASAS central committee held at its office at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on August 3, 2026. JASAS central convener and BNP National Executive Committee member, actor Helal Khan, chaired the meeting, while member secretary Zakir Hossain Rokon moderated it.
According to the decisions, JASAS will stage Nazrul’s plays “Madhumala” and “Aleya” as part of the government’s observance of “Nazrul Year”. The organisation also plans to produce a full-length feature film based on the life of the national poet.
JASAS will organise a nationwide talent hunt based on Nazrul’s literary works and contributions. The competition will feature four categories: speeches on Nazrul’s life, recitation, music, and dance and choreography.
The organisation also plans to hold a major day-long cultural programme at the Army Stadium during the winter, bringing together Nazrul researchers, Nazrul music performers, band artists and recitation artists from Bangladesh and abroad.
Another decision was to organise an exchange meeting involving cultural personalities from across the country in the presence of the culture minister, information and broadcasting minister, state minister and the prime minister’s adviser. The organisation also plans a subsequent meeting between cultural figures and the prime minister.
JASAS will separately organise a programme commemorating JASAS leader Shaheed Jasim, who was killed during the July Mass Uprising, and honouring those injured during the movement.
The meeting also called on interested JASAS leaders and activists to submit their biodata and certificates for appropriate recognition.
To strengthen the organisation, JASAS decided to hold workers’ meetings in unapproved metropolitan, district and university units and approve new committees within a short period. Several central leaders were assigned to coordinate the formation of university-level committees.
The meeting also formed a 12-member investigation committee to look into an incident that took place at the JASAS office in Nayapaltan on January 27, 2026. The committee comprises eight joint conveners and four senior members and is expected to submit its report to the central convener and member secretary soon.
The meeting was attended by JASAS joint conveners Liaquat Ali, Md Ahsan Ullah Chowdhury, Javed Ahmed Kislu, KM Khaleduzzaman Jewel, Md Ferdous Fakir, engineer Zakir Hossain, Farhana Chowdhury Baby and Advocate Farhad Hossain Nion, among other central leaders and members.
