At least 300 children have been killed in Gaza during the 300 days since a ceasefire was declared, meaning an average of one child has died every day, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Middle East Eye reported the figures on Saturday (August 8), citing UNICEF.
Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, said in a statement that a ceasefire in which an average of one child dies every day has failed children.
“Any ceasefire that sees an average of one child killed every day is a failure for children,” he said.
Beigbeder said hundreds more children had been injured, many of them seriously.
“Children in Gaza are still waiting for an end to the violence they were promised would end,” he said.
UNICEF said children across Gaza remain at severe risk from acute malnutrition, disease, unsafe water and damaged sanitation systems.
The agency stressed that despite the ceasefire, the humanitarian conditions facing children in Gaza remain critical, with many still exposed to risks that threaten their survival and wellbeing.
