The High Commission of India in Dhaka on Friday said it was encouraged by the overwhelming response from Bangladeshi citizens seeking to travel to India, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties and deepening the longstanding friendship between the two neighbouring countries.
“We are truly encouraged by the overwhelming response from those wishing to travel to India for various purposes,” the Indian High Commission said in a statement.
“As we continue to expand our visa services and make the application process smoother and more convenient, we sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation,” the diplomatic mission added.
The statement comes after India resumed issuing tourist visas to Bangladeshi citizens on 28 June, nearly two years after the service was suspended, in a move aimed at further enhancing people-to-people connectivity between the two countries.
The announcement was made by newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi during a visit to the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) at Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka on 25 June.
Describing the restoration of tourist visas as a top priority, Trivedi said the decision marked an important beginning to his tenure in Bangladesh.
“I feel the visa issue is the most important one. This is the first thing I have done as High Commissioner. I am very happy, and I hope the common people will also be happy.
I feel very proud to begin my work as the High Commissioner of India,” he told reporters during the visit.
According to the Indian mission, visas for Bangladeshi citizens will continue to be processed through the five Indian Visa Application Centres located in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chattogram, Sylhet and Khulna.
The Indian High Commissioner expressed hope that the resumption of tourist visas would contribute to further strengthening the longstanding people-to-people ties and bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India.
