The government will take steps to preserve and refurbish the historic Kalurghat radio station in Chattogram, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Chowdhury said on Saturday.
He made the announcement after visiting the site, which holds significant historical importance as the place from where Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman declared Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.
“Kalurghat radio station has long remained neglected and has suffered damage due to rain. The government will take appropriate initiatives to protect and renovate this historic structure,” the state minister said while speaking to journalists.
BNP lawmaker from Chattogram-8 Ershad Ullah and officials of the station were present during the visit.
Responding to a question about a recent virtual speech by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from New Delhi, Yasser questioned whether media outlets should broadcast speeches of what he described as a “fascist organisation.” He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Home Ministry have already clarified the government’s position on the issue.
The minister also expressed concern over the spread of misinformation and rumours on social media, saying the government is considering new measures to address the challenge.
On Bangladesh Television (BTV), he said a forensic audit is being initiated to improve programme quality, transmission standards and digital capacity.
Later, Yasser visited the regional information office in Chattogram and held a meeting with officials of the Press Information Department (PID).
He highlighted the PID’s role in bridging the information gap between the government and the public by disseminating updates on development activities, public services and awareness campaigns, particularly during disasters.
Addressing manpower shortages in the department, he said steps would be taken to resolve the issue quickly, while better coordination among agencies would ensure optimal use of existing resources.
He also urged PID officials to make their activities more dynamic and effective to deliver quality public services and ensure government information reaches people’s doorsteps.
A documentary on the activities of the Chattogram PID was presented at the meeting. Officials from various government offices and media representatives attended the programme.
