Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has expressed strong optimism that longstanding issues between Dhaka and New Delhi could be resolved if Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi meet in person.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trivedi described both leaders as “people’s persons,” suggesting that their direct engagement could unlock progress on bilateral concerns.
“When two leaders meet, a lot of problems are sorted out. I have full confidence,” he said.
Trivedi emphasized that ties remain fundamentally strong despite recent strains.
“People are united… there is nothing negative. Things remain positive,” he added.
His remarks came during the inauguration of a children’s facility at the Indian Visa Application Centre in Dhaka.
The envoy also noted growing demand for Indian visas, with efforts underway to gradually expand processing capacity.
India has formally invited Tarique Rahman to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi on September 12–13, where global cooperation, trade, and sustainable development will be key themes.
The invitation carries dual significance, inviting Tarique Rahman both as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, following a bilateral visit invitation extended in February 2026, and as BIMSTEC Chair to participate in the summit’s outreach session.
Bangladesh currently chairs BIMSTEC, a regional bloc comprising seven Bay of Bengal nations.
Diplomatic relations have faced fresh tension following remarks by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a media interaction in New Delhi.Dhaka reacted strongly, calling the event unacceptable and raising concerns over activities on Indian soil.
In response, India clarified it had no involvement in the event and does not endorse the statements made.
Outlook
Despite these challenges, India’s latest messaging signals a willingness to reset the tone through leadership-level dialogue.
A potential Tarique–Modi meeting—possibly on the sidelines of the BRICS summit—could become a key moment in shaping the next phase of Bangladesh–India relations.
