Students blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Gazipur on Sunday protesting the death of a madrasa student in a road accident in the Gazipura area of Tongi and demanding the construction of a foot overbridge.
The students took to the highway around 11am, taking positions in front of the main gate of Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasa and at the Gazipura bus stand. The blockade continued until at least 2pm.
The protest disrupted traffic on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, causing long tailbacks on both sides. Passengers and drivers of long-distance buses and other vehicles were among those facing significant difficulties.
According to the protesting students, Yasin Ali, 17, a ninth-grade student of the madrasa, was killed after being hit by a covered van while crossing the highway near Gazipura bus stand on Saturday evening.
In protest against his death, students began the highway blockade on Sunday morning.
Yasin was the son of Ripon Mia of Neyapara area in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna. He had been living with his family in a rented house in Kazipara area of Gazipura, Tongi.
