Galle Gladiators have expressed interest in buying a franchise in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) after winning their maiden Lanka Premier League (LPL) title.
The Gladiators secured their first LPL championship by defeating Jaffna Kings in the final, denying the three-time defending champions a fourth consecutive title.
A member of the Galle Gladiators ownership group told the media that the franchise is already in discussions with officials of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) about acquiring a BPL team.
“We are thinking about taking a team in the BPL and will discuss it. The LPL has just finished, and we will discuss Bangladesh,” the owner said.
“I am Indian, and I know how many spectators there are in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Bangladeshis are cricket crazy. Hopefully, we will also be in Bangladesh. I don’t want to name anyone, but yes, we are in discussions with BCB officials,” he added.
Reflecting on Galle’s historic LPL triumph, he said the achievement was the result of months of hard work and careful planning.
“It is a great feeling. The journey started in April, followed by four difficult months with many ups and downs. We planned properly and tried to execute those plans. The players and support staff made it possible,” he said.
Several prominent cricketers featured for Galle Gladiators in this season’s LPL, including Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan Sohan. Litton Das was also expected to join the team but could not take part because of injury.
The Gladiators owner praised Sohan while expressing disappointment at missing Litton.
“Nurul Hasan Sohan is great. Unfortunately, we could not get Litton. But we had Sohan, and he stepped up at the right time and performed when we needed him. However, we missed Litton a lot,” he said.
