Gas supply has been suspended across Lakshmipur district after a leak was detected in an underwater gas pipeline in the Kendurbag area of Begumganj upazila in Noakhali.
The disruption has affected around 7,150 customers, including nearly 7,000 residential and 150 commercial consumers. Four CNG filling stations—two in Begumganj and two in Lakshmipur—are also without gas.
The leak was detected on Friday afternoon in a section of the pipeline located beneath water under a bridge beside the Lakshmipur-Noakhali highway in Kendurbag.
For safety reasons, gas supply through the affected pipeline was suspended from Saturday night. The shutdown has caused significant inconvenience to residential consumers in Lakshmipur, particularly for cooking. The closure of CNG stations has also disrupted transport services, causing difficulties for drivers and passengers.
Officials of Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited said repair work began on Sunday morning. They hoped to restore gas supply by midnight if the work proceeds as planned.
Shah Alam, deputy general manager of the company’s Noakhali office, said the pipeline is located about 10 feet underwater, making direct repairs difficult.
“Instead of repairing the leaking section, we will construct a bypass line using a new pipeline and restore gas supply,” he said.
He added that the leak had disrupted gas supplies to nearly 7,000 residential and 150 commercial customers in Lakshmipur, as well as two CNG stations in Begumganj and two in Lakshmipur.
The company is working to complete the bypass connection as quickly as possible and restore normal gas distribution.
