ICT convicted Abul Kalam seeks review of death sentence

Convicted war crimes accused Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, alias Baccu Razakar, has petitioned the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court seeking acquittal in a case over crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War.

The Appellate Division is scheduled to hear on Monday whether it will accept his petition for consideration, Prosecutor Mizanul Islam of the International Crimes Tribunal confirmed to Manab Zamin.

According to the prosecutor, Azad has invoked Article 104 of the Constitution, which empowers the Supreme Court to exercise its jurisdiction to ensure “complete justice.”

The matter will now depend on the decision of the Appellate Division, he said.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Azad to death on January 21, 2013, after finding him guilty of several charges of crimes against humanity and genocide committed during the 1971 Liberation War.

The verdict was the first judgment delivered by the International Crimes Tribunal in a case concerning crimes committed during the Liberation War.
