The month-long tree fair in Dhaka concluded with impressive sales, as nearly 1.6 million saplings were sold, generating around Tk 160 million in revenue, according to the Forest Department.
Held at the old trade fair ground in Agargaon, the event began on July 9 and drew large crowds throughout its run. A total of 74 stalls participated this year, marking a steady rise from last year’s sales of 1.5 million saplings.
Medicinal plants emerged as the top attraction, reflecting growing public awareness about health and natural remedies. Popular varieties included insulin plant, haritaki, bohera, tulsi, neem, and oregano.
At the closing ceremony on Sunday, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintu said both visitor turnout and sales had exceeded expectations. He also highlighted the government’s pledge to plant 250 million trees nationwide over five years, expressing hope that Bangladesh could achieve 27% forest coverage before 2035 with collective efforts.
Among participants, Hossain Nursery won top honors in the double-stall category, selling around 94,000 saplings and earning Tk 9.2 million.
The stall showcased an impressive 1,400 species, ranging from fruit-bearing and ornamental plants to orchids, bonsai, and medicinal varieties.
In the single-stall category, Bismillah Nursery was named the best performer, selling about 15,000 saplings. Its owner noted strong demand for medicinal plants such as ashwagandha, nagkeshar, and camphor, alongside popular fruit saplings like rambutan, persimmon, avocado, and grapes.
Organizers say the fair’s success highlights a growing trend toward greenery and sustainable living, with more people investing in plants for both health and environmental benefits.
