The United Nations envoy for Yemen has called on Houthi forces to immediately stop their attacks following a surge in violence targeting the Red Sea port city of al-Makha.
In a statement posted on X, UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg voiced deep concern over the recent missile and drone strikes, warning that the escalation marks the most intense military activity since the 2022 UN-brokered truce. He said the situation significantly raises the risk of a return to full-scale conflict in the war-torn country.
“This escalation must stop, and civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected,” Grundberg said, urging all sides to exercise “maximum restraint.”
According to Yemen’s internationally recognised government, the latest attack on al-Makha killed seven people, including four soldiers and three civilians, and left at least 30 others wounded.
The incident follows an earlier wave of strikes on Sunday that claimed at least 11 lives, further heightening fears of a broader escalation in the conflict.
The UN continues to push for de-escalation as concerns grow over civilian safety and the potential collapse of fragile peace efforts.
