A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, causing injuries and significant structural damage, particularly in the Chocó department.
The earthquake’s epicentre was near San José del Palmar, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The tremor was strongly felt in several Colombian cities, including Bogotá, as well as in neighbouring Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela.
In Quibdó, the capital of Chocó, authorities reported major damage to buildings, while injuries were also reported in the nearby city of Pereira.
Officials warned residents about possible aftershocks and began assessing the extent of the damage.
The Colombian Geological Service initially measured the earthquake at 6.6 magnitude, while the USGS later revised its estimate to 7.4.
The US tsunami warning system reported no tsunami threat following the quake.
