Egypt could join the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement involving Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said.
He indicated that Cairo could become a member once some technical issues are resolved.
Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan signed the agreement in Mecca on August 7, establishing a mutual-defence framework under which an attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all.
The pact has been compared by Fidan to NATO’s Article 5, although he stressed that it is not directed against Iran or any other specific country.
Egypt had participated in discussions on regional security with the three countries but did not sign the initial agreement.
Its possible entry would expand the alliance’s military and strategic weight across both the Middle East and North Africa.
