A legal notice has been served on AB Party leader Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad over remarks alleged to be defamatory and insulting to the University of Dhaka.
The notice calls for legal and administrative action against him and seeks Tk 1 billion (Tk 100 crore) in exemplary damages for allegedly tarnishing the university’s reputation.
The notice was sent on Saturday (July 4) by advocate Tanmoy Kumar Saha, a former student of the University of Dhaka’s Department of Law. Copies were also sent to the secretaries of the Ministries of Education and Home Affairs and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka.
According to the notice, the claimed compensation should be deposited into the University of Dhaka’s research fund.
The notice alleges that in a recent statement, Barrister Fuad questioned the contributions of the university’s graduates over the past 50 to 70 years. It also accuses him of making hateful, communal and divisive remarks about the university’s teachers and others associated with the institution. He further claimed that the country’s education system was being deliberately undermined.
According to the notice, Fuad’s remarks have damaged the long-standing reputation and dignity of the University of Dhaka and negatively affected its image both at home and abroad. It further claims that the comments have caused outrage and mental anguish among the university’s current and former students, as well as the general public.
