Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has received several letters, including death threats. One of them threatens to kill him and his wife Donna Ganguly. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president has told police that he has been receiving such threatening letters for several months.
According to Indian news agency PTI, after Sourav Ganguly filed a written complaint with Thakurpukur police station in South Kolkata, the police have launched a thorough investigation to find out who sent such threatening letters.
A senior police officer said, “We have taken the complaint very seriously and have started an investigation. The language of the letter, the source of sending it and the details of the courier service are being examined to identify the person responsible.”
One of India’s most successful former captains, he received the latest threatening letter at his office yesterday. He then went to Thakurpukur police station in South Kolkata and lodged a written complaint.
Indian media outlet News18 reported that the former BCCI president had allegedly been receiving such letters for about six months. However, the matter was not given much importance initially.
According to a police complaint filed by the manager of the former captain who led India to the 2002 Champions Trophy, two letters that arrived at his office yesterday directly threatened to kill Sourav Ganguly and his wife Donna, along with messages to harm their relatives and close people.
The police official said that in addition to examining the content of the letter, investigators are trying to uncover the identity of the sender and the motive for the attack.
Citing preliminary investigations, the police officer further said that the two letters were probably sent through a courier service by a person from Belgharia in North 24 Parganas district.
The location and movement of the suspicious SIM card used by the sender have been monitored and the courier agency concerned has been contacted to collect details of the parcel, the police officer said. “We have spoken to the courier service staff and have been able to identify a mobile number. Efforts are on to trace the current location of the number,” he said.
The police officer said that Kolkata Police investigators are investigating whether all the letters were sent by the same person and what the real reason behind the threat was.
