The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) has seized foreign cigarettes worth around Tk 1.5 crore during a raid at Fruit Lane in Reazuddin Bazar in Chattogram city.
Acting on a tip-off, a RAB-7 team conducted the raid on the second and third floors of a building in Fruit Lane on Monday night.
According to RAB-7, the team searched several rooms of the building based on intelligence that a large quantity of foreign cigarettes had been illegally imported without paying government duties and taxes.
RAB-7 Major Jalis Mahmud Khan said around Tk 1.5 crore worth of cigarettes of different foreign brands were seized during the operation.
“We are working to identify those involved in the illegal import and sale of the cigarettes. Legal action will be taken against those responsible after identifying them,” he said.
The RAB official said further legal proceedings in connection with the seizure were underway.
