A section of doctors and students staged a sit-in at the office of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Director Brig Gen Asaduzzaman on Monday, demanding his resignation.

The protesters entered the director’s office around noon and chanted slogans, including, “One point, one demand, the director’s resignation.” They later took up positions inside the office.

The protest came amid an ongoing dispute over the transfer of the hospital’s Administrative Officer Rezaul Islam.

According to officials, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) recently ordered Rezaul Islam’s transfer to Mymensingh, while Administrative Officer Mozammel Haque of Mymensingh was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile, a group of third- and fourth-class employees of the hospital gathered outside the director’s office to submit a memorandum demanding justice over the alleged assault of a staff member on Monday and action against those responsible.

However, the employees said they were unable to submit the memorandum because the doctors and students were occupying the director’s office.

The developments have added to tensions at the country’s premier public medical college hospital, with different groups raising separate demands concerning the administration and treatment of staff.
