Police arrested four people while allegedly preparing for a flash procession organised by the Dhaka North unit of the banned Awami League in the capital’s Mohakhali area. Police also alleged that cocktails were exploded to create panic during the incident.
The incident took place around 1:30pm on Tuesday (August 11) near Muktijoddha Goli adjacent to the Institute of Public Health and in front of the CM Pump in Mohakhali.
The arrested individuals were identified as Aslam Mia, 25, Ashikul Islam, 24, Mahfuzur Rahman Siam, 19, and Md Monir Hossain, 48.
Banani Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mehedi Hasan said, “We have arrested four people. We initially suspect that they were trying to become active around August 15.”
He said several people fled after allegedly exploding cocktails to create panic during the arrest operation. Police also seized remnants of exploded cocktails from the scene.
According to police, around 30 to 40 alleged Awami League activists were preparing for a procession under the banner of the Dhaka North unit at around 1:25pm. When Banani police arrived after receiving information, they dispersed and attempted to flee. Four were later arrested with the help of local residents.
Police said one of the four was beaten by local residents before being handed over to the Mohakhali Terminal police outpost.
According to police, Aslam Mia and Ashikul Islam are activists of the Government Bangla College unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and fourth-year BBA students at the college. The political identities and other details of the remaining two are being verified.
Police are also checking whether the arrested individuals have any previous criminal cases.
Legal proceedings are being initiated against the four, and a case is being prepared at Banani Police Station. Remnants of the exploded cocktails have also been seized as evidence.
