Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been invited to visit India on a bilateral trip and also to attend the BRICS Outreach Session to be held in New Delhi, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Tuesday.

Jaiswal made the remarks at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs’ weekly briefing in New Delhi.

He said Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Prime Minister Tarek Rahman in Dhaka on Monday. During the meeting, the two sides discussed various issues of mutual interest.

“Our High Commissioner met the Prime Minister of Bangladesh yesterday. The two sides discussed issues of mutual interest. Regarding the invitation you mentioned, we have invited him for a bilateral visit as well as to attend the BRICS Outreach Session to be held in Delhi. Further information will be shared with you in due course,” Jaiswal said.

However, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said on Monday that no decision has yet been made on whether Tarek Rahman will attend the BRICS Outreach Session.

At Tuesday’s press briefing, Jaiswal was also asked about Dhaka’s request for the extradition of former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina. He said the matter was being examined in accordance with India’s established procedures.

He added that India would share any new information on the matter when available.

Regarding the killing of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, Jaiswal said it was a legal matter and that an investigation was underway.
