Ahmadul Kobir, Malaysia: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has shared an emotional photograph with his wife, former Deputy Prime Minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, from his hospital bed, thanking her for standing by him during his illness.
Anwar posted the photograph on his official Facebook page on Tuesday, August 11, with the message: “A partner who stands by me through every situation. Thank you, Azizah, for always being by my side.”
The photograph shows Wan Azizah sitting beside Anwar and holding his hand as he receives treatment. Both appear to be smiling.
The post quickly drew a warm response on social media, with many users wishing the Malaysian prime minister a speedy recovery.
Anwar recently underwent laparoscopic surgery for a para-umbilical hernia. He successfully underwent the scheduled procedure on Monday, August 10, and is now receiving physiotherapy while remaining under close observation by specialist doctors.
The Malaysian Prime Minister’s Office has said the procedure was successful and that his recovery is being closely monitored.
Anwar and Wan Azizah have been married for nearly 46 years. Their relationship has spanned major political upheavals as well as personal and family challenges.
Wan Azizah has long been regarded as a key source of support for Anwar throughout his political career. She herself has played a prominent role in Malaysian politics, including serving as the country’s deputy prime minister.
Anwar has repeatedly acknowledged the sacrifices made by his wife, children and family during the difficult periods of his political life.
While discussing his biographical film Anwar: The Untold Story in 2023, he spoke about the hardships faced by his family and close associates during various stages of his political struggle.
The latest photograph offered a more personal glimpse into their relationship, showing the couple together at a time when Anwar is recovering from surgery.
Anwar celebrated his 79th birthday on August 10, the same day he underwent the surgical procedure. His photograph with Wan Azizah was shared the following day.
According to the Office of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar was born on August 10, 1947, and became Malaysia’s 10th prime minister in November 2022.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has also wished Anwar a speedy recovery, describing him as a “valuable friend of the nation”.
Tarique Rahman said he was praying for Anwar’s full and speedy recovery and wished him lasting good health and strength. He also conveyed his own and the people of Bangladesh’s best wishes to the Malaysian prime minister.
Tarique Rahman assumed office as Bangladesh’s prime minister in February 2026. He visited Malaysia in June and held bilateral talks with Anwar, with discussions covering the labour market, recruitment of Bangladeshi workers, investment and broader bilateral cooperation.
The hospital photograph has since become a deeply human moment amid Malaysia’s political landscape, highlighting the personal support behind a leader recovering from illness.
