Khulna: A 33-year-old man named Fakhrul Sheikh was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Rupsa upazila of Khulna. The incident took place at around 1:00am on Tuesday night at the office of an MRB brick kiln in Kismat Khulna village, Ward No. 5 of Naihati Union.
Rupsa Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Razzak Mir confirmed the incident on Wednesday morning (August 12).
The deceased, Fakhrul Sheikh, was the son of Momin Uddin of Naihati village and the younger brother of former student leader Farhad Sheikh. Fakhrul was also a former student leader of Rupsa College and was currently involved in politics as a worker of the Jubo Dal.
According to family members, the brick kiln belonged to Fakhrul’s family. As thefts had occurred at the kiln on several occasions, Fakhrul would sometimes spend nights there to provide security. On the night of the incident, he was inside the kiln premises when the attackers entered at around 1:00am, shot him, and fled the scene.
At around 1:11am, his elder brother and former student leader Farhad Sheikh was informed that Fakhrul had been shot. He rushed to the brick kiln and found his younger brother lying there with gunshot wounds. With the help of locals, Fakhrul was taken to Rupsa Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared him dead.
Fakhrul had sustained two gunshot wounds.
OC Abdur Razzak Mir said several teams of Rupsa police were already working to determine the motive behind the killing, identify those involved, and arrest them.
The body has been sent to the morgue of Khulna Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
