BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has described his wife, Rahat Ara Begum, as the “greatest blessing” of his life, recalling her courage, sacrifice and support during difficult periods in his political career.
In a recent video interview with an online news outlet, Mirza Fakhrul spoke about his family life and his wife’s role in supporting him throughout his political journey.
Describing his wife as his life partner, he said he was grateful to Allah for having married her, particularly because his life became increasingly uncertain after he entered politics.
Rahat Ara Begum worked for many years at an insurance company while also managing the family and supporting the education of their daughters. Mirza Fakhrul recalled the hardships she endured while raising their children, including travelling by public transport while their daughters attended Holy Cross School.
He said his wife’s earnings and efforts played an important role in ensuring their daughters’ education.
Recalling difficult periods in his political career, Mirza Fakhrul said his wife always showed courage when he faced arrest or police raids.
He recalled an incident when police raided their home at night. His wife, he said, refused to open the door until dawn, while the media gathered outside after news of the raid spread.
“She stood by me courageously every time there was a crisis,” he said, recalling how she even packed his bag when police came to take him away.
Mirza Fakhrul said his wife never became frustrated with him because of his political activities. Instead, she continued to support him despite the uncertainty and difficulties associated with his political career.
He said her sacrifices and support had been invaluable throughout his long political journey.
