Three family members found dead in Sylhet house

Police recovered the bodies of three members of the same household, including an elderly couple and their domestic worker, from a house in Sylhet city’s Raynagar Mitali Residential Area on Wednesday morning (August 12).

The bodies were found at House No. 111 at around 9:00am after local residents noticed blood inside the house and informed police.

The victims were identified as Abdus Sattar Mia, 90, his 76-year-old wife and their domestic worker Tahmina, 25.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Manzurul Alam confirmed the incident.

Police, along with Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) crime-scene teams, visited the house and began collecting evidence.

SMP Commissioner Sarwar Murshed Shamim, who inspected the scene, said the victims appeared to have been attacked with a sharp weapon. However, police did not immediately recover any weapon from the crime scene.

He said wardrobes and cupboards inside the house were found open, raising suspicions that gold ornaments or other valuables might have been stolen.

The commissioner also said tenants on the fourth floor of the building reported hearing shouting and screaming from the house in the morning.

Police have not yet determined the motive behind the killings. Officials are examining whether the incident was linked to previous enmity, political rivalry or a robbery.

The bodies were being prepared to be sent to the morgue at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsies.

Nazmul Haque Nazu, general secretary of the Mitali Residential Area, said residents were shocked after learning about the killings and immediately informed law enforcement authorities.

Sattar Mia was known locally as a respected elderly resident and an Awami League activist, according to local residents.

The triple killing has caused fear and tension across the Raynagar and Mitali residential areas. A large crowd gathered outside the house after news of the incident spread, prompting authorities to deploy additional police to control the situation.

Police said several teams were working to identify and arrest those responsible, while the investigation into the killings was continuing.
