The flood situation in northern Bangladesh has deteriorated further as active monsoon conditions and heavy upstream rainfall have pushed several rivers above danger levels, inundating homes and croplands in low-lying areas.
According to the latest update from the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) on Wednesday, water levels in the Teesta River were flowing above the danger mark at several points in Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts.
The rising water has also entered low-lying areas of Gaibandha, Kurigram and Jamalpur. Flooding has disrupted communication in char and riverside areas, leaving residents facing severe hardship.
The FFWC warned that the situation could remain unchanged or worsen slightly over the next 48 to 72 hours, as moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast in the northern region and adjoining upstream areas.
Local administrations and the Bangladesh Water Development Board have issued warnings in vulnerable areas, urging people living near riverbanks to move to safer locations and follow official instructions.
Local authorities are also continuing rescue operations and distributing relief supplies in affected areas.
