Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan on Saturday said the government has introduced Bangla QR to promote technology-driven transactions, alleging that the previous government had failed to integrate technology into people’s daily lives.
He made the remarks after making a purchase using a Bangla QR code at Aziz Super Market in the capital’s Shahbagh area.
Bangladesh Bank has made the use of Bangla QR (Quick Response) Code mandatory as part of its efforts to make the country’s digital payment system simpler, more affordable and universally accessible. As part of the initiative to promote digital transactions, the minister visited Aziz Super Market and used the unified QR code to make a purchase.
Speaking on the occasion, Swapan said the new system is designed to increase technology-based transactions while benefiting both merchants and consumers.
“The system has made transactions easier and more convenient. It eliminates the hassle of carrying change and reduces the risk of counterfeit currency,” he said, adding that payments can be made using both smartphones and feature phones.
According to officials, transactions worth Tk 220 million were made through Bangla QR on June 30 and July 1 alone. More than two million merchant QR codes across the country have already been converted to the Bangla QR system.
